FAQs

  1. What is Olaplex and how does it work?

Olaplex is a bond multiplier containing a single active ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate. Olaplex works by finding single sulfur hydrogen bonds and cross linking them back together to form disulfide bonds before, during and after services. Disulfide bonds are broken via chemical, thermal, and mechanical processes.

Bonds break when exposed to chemicals in colour, from heat, and mechanical force such as combing wet hair.

Olaplex is free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes, gluten and is never tested on animals.

Use Olaplex as a tool. The more you use Olaplex, the more familiar you will become. Both with the benefits for you as a stylist and most importantly for the client in your chair. With this knowledge comes the ability to push hair farther than ever before. How you learn is by continued use and finding which methods work best for you personally.

    Common Sense Prevails

Professional analysis and hair diagnosis is required prior to all colour services. When working on compromised hair, it is important to begin with an Olaplex treatment to rebuild the hair. After doing so, perform an elasticity test before lightening.

Olaplex may be a game changer, but it is not a magic wand. Professional judgement is still required and you shouldn’t attempt anything with Olaplex that you wouldn’t without.

  2. How do I introduce Olaplex to my clients?

Our clients are becoming more and more educated due to social media. By far one of the best marketing tools available is Instagram. If you check out the #olaplexau hashtag, there are thousands of posts from stylists around the Australia with real world results.

Creating comparison swatches is another great way to show your clients the difference. By doing this, you can compare lightener with Olaplex versus lightener without. The results will speak for themselves!

Beyond this, the best way to talk to your clients about Olaplex is to use it on yourself. This changes Olaplex from trying to sell a service to talking about something you genuinely use and believe in.

  3. Can anyone buy Olaplex?

The Olaplex reparative system is intended for use in a professional salon setting, and as such is only available for purchase by certified salon professionals.

The Olaplex No. 3 Bond perfector is available for retail sale from Olaplex’s salon network around Australia, as well as a limited number of authorised online re-sellers. To find your nearest salon, please contact us.

We are unable to guarantee authenticity or provide advice on any product that is not purchased from Olaplex.com.au, an official distributor or authorised reseller.

  4. How can I use Olaplex when lightening or colouring hair?

The most common use of Olaplex is to protect and repair hair during lightening or colouring process:

    1. Offer your clients an “Olaplex colour service upgrade”
    2. Add No. 1 Bond Multiplier directly to the lightener or colour as per the mixing chart below and then leave to process
    3. Rinse the colour from the hair and prior to shampooing, apply No. 2 Bond Perfector to eliminate breakage. Leave on the hair
    4. Rinse, shampoo, and condition the hair. Olaplex is not a conditioner, so why not add an extra moisture treatment to the hair for an even softer result.
    5. Hand the bottle of No. 3 Hair Perfector directly to the client to take home and use once a week.

  5. What should I do if my client has very damaged, over processed hair?

Like we say, Olaplex is a game changer but it is not a magic wand. If your client has damaged, over processed hair, you should always undergo an Olaplex Intensive Stand-Alone treatment before undertaking further chemical servicing.

    We suggest these steps:

    1. For medium to long length hair, mix 15ml (1/2oz) of Olaplex No. 1 Bond Multiplier with 90ml (3oz) of water in a non-spraying applicator bottle. See the diluted Olaplex. No. 1 formula chart below for other length recommendations.
    2. Take the client to the shampoo bowl and saturate the hair thoroughly. Process for 5 minutes.
    3. Without rinsing, apply a generous amount of No. 2 Bond Perfector from the roots to ends and comb through thoroughly. See the Olaplex No. 2 Quantity chart below for a guide to usage.
    4. Process for a minimum of 20 minutes.
    5. Rinse, shampoo and condition. Follow with moisture and protein where applicable.

We recommend applying to dry hair to see saturation. If client has product build-up such as oils or silicones, shampoo first and then apply to damp, towel dried hair. If client has mineral build-up, a hard water treatment is recommended first to remove this as it will act as a barrier.

  6. How can I use Olaplex when undertaking a perm service?
    1. As always, do a thorough consultation to understand what the client wants, doesn’t want and try to read between the lines into what maybe they aren’t saying.
    2. Shampoo the hair with your preferred clarifying shampoo

Tip: If the client’s hair is compromised, lightened, colour-treated or previously permed, take equal amounts of Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector and a good protein conditioner/re-constructor, mix in a bowl, apply to the towel dried hair working it through the highly porous/damaged areas with your fingers. After being applied, sit the client under a comfortably hot dryer without a plastic bag as you want the mixture to dry thoroughly into the hair. Once bone-dry, mist client’s hair with water and proceed to wrap perm. You can skip this step with normal or virgin hair.

    1. After perm is wrapped add 1.875ml of Olaplex No. 1 Bond Multiplier to waving lotion. Apply to rods. This will not slow down or hinder the processing time.
    2. Test curl immediately to gauge how long to set your timer for. Use your professional judgment when determining your test curl intervals.
    3. Once test curl is fully developed, rinse with as hot water as possible to flush away any thio residues.
    4. Towel blot thoroughly, I use terry first, then follow up with paper towels.

Tip: Creep Time is the time between when you finish towel blotting and the time you begin to apply the neutralizer. With normal hair I leave 5 minutes before applying the neutralizer, fine hair and overly porous hair up to 30 minutes. This allows the softened hair to settle into its new formation and helps with curl resiliency and durability in the end result.

    1. Add 1.875ml ounce of Olaplex No. 1 Bond Multiplier to neutralizer.
    2. Follow the directions outlined on the “Chart for Using Olaplex with Perms” according to the hair type you are working on. As always, mix your Olaplex mixture in a non-spraying applicator bottle.
    3. After removing rods, rinse with cool water and give a light shampoo. There is no need for a 48-hour waiting period after doing neutralization with Olaplex. As this finishes oxidation, you may shampoo after. We do not recommend using Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector due to weight and length of time left on the hair. If you have used Olaplex throughout the whole process the client wouldn’t need an Olaplex Stand-Alone Treatment or the use of Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector until 4-5 weeks after the perm.
    4. Style as usual.

  7. What is the processing time for lightener?

    This varies.

We cannot tell you an average or approximate, as every head of hair is different.  There is no norm, but we do know that it takes longer to process, but that is okay because good hair is worth the extra time.

We encourage all Olaplex users to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using their chosen colour products.

Any issues with deposit, processing time or lift may be solved by using less Olaplex.

  8. How does heat affect olaplex?

We do not recommend heat with any lightening service.

If you choose to use heat, we advise you to use with educated caution, checking the hair’s elasticity and porosity every 3-5 minutes.

  9. What is the difference between the No. 1 Bond Multiplier, the No. 2 Bond Perfector and No. 3 Hair Perfector?

All Olaplex products contain the same single active ingredient that multiplies and cross-links bonds; at different concentrations. However, the three steps have been formulated for their own distinct purpose.

The No. 1 Bond Multiplier is to be added directly into colour or lightener to actively protect, rebuild and rebuild your client’s hair during lightening or colouring services. It can also be utilised as a stand-alone treatment on damaged hair as an intensive rebuild service.

Our No. 2 Bond Perfector was developed as a cream formula for ease of application after a colour service or as an express treatment. This second step links disulfide bonds after the initial service, restoring the strength, structure and integrity hair.

The No. 3 Hair Perfector is the client’s ‘take-home’ portion of the service, enabling the maintenance of strong, healthy hair in between colour services.

  10. What will happen if I use Olaplex a few times on compromised hair and then stop?

Olaplex does one job and one job only – reconnect broken disulphide bonds in your hair. The results you achieve from Olaplex are permanent – that is, if you stop using Olaplex, the bonds will not automatically revert to their broken form.

Nevertheless, bonds break when exposed to chemicals in colour, from heat, and mechanical force such as combing wet hair.

Because of this, if you expose your hair to stresses such as chemicals, heat or mechanical force, new damage to the bonds in your hair can occur.
